Review: Reunion pic not as funny as advertised

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A high-school reunion story that spreads attention among its high-profile cast members more evenly than the average film of this sort, Jamie Linden's "10 Years" is dedicated to the urge to believe that a single get-together can afford closure on everything from prom night disappointments to misguided life choices. More bittersweet than funny but not a downer overall, the pic has reasonable prospects with young viewers who haven't seen many of its thematic ancestors.

Linden's script spreads the subplots around heavily, the movie's main identification is with Jake (Channing Tatum, who just so happens to be a producer), who loves girlfriend Jess (Tatum's wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum) but can't decide when to pop the question. Bringing Jess along to his 10-year reunion, he's flustered to see high school sweetheart Mary (Rosario Dawson) and the husband (Ron Livingston) he didn't know she had.

Buzzing around Jake in a flurry of "so good to see you!"s are old classmates who became rock stars (Oscar Isaac), moved to the big city (Justin Long), or simply decided to grow up and stop bullying nerds (Chris Pratt, helped by unusually tolerant wife Ari Graynor). As usual with a large ensemble, recounting the subplots (and even the characters) would take a while, but only a couple of key cast members get lost in the shuffle (sorry, Anthony Mackie).

Among the more successful through-lines is a second-chance courtship between Isaac's rock star and the only girl at the reunion (Kate Mara), who isn't fawning over him, and, it turns out, has never even heard his hit song. Among the least pleasing is one in which Pratt tries to make amends with every nerd he ever belittled, winds up making them deeply uncomfortable, and eventually drinks himself into a full reversion to jerk mode. If anybody could keep this ball rolling, it's Pratt, who in previous roles has trained viewers to love him despite many faults. Though we're with Pratt for a while, Linden soon forces him to be more of a boor than we can take.

It wouldn't be a party without some drunken unpleasantness, of course. And "10 Years" benefits from actors (like Dawson) who can generate enough distractingly warm-hearted vibes to keep the overall mood positive. This isn't a new generation's "Big Chill" and doesn't try to be ? but it's a good deal more genuine-feeling than "American Reunion," whose characters graduated just a couple of years earlier than this crew but seem much closer to settling into dull adulthood.

"10 Years," an Anchor Bay Entertainment release, is rated PG-13 for language, alcohol abuse, some sexual material and drug use. Running time: 100 minutes.

Motion Picture Association of America rating definition for PG-13: Special parental guidance strongly suggested for children under 13. Some material may be inappropriate for young children.

Single-family L House in Scharten, Austria

by Simona Ganea, posted in Architecture, on September 10th, 2012

House L is a single family home located in Scharten, Austria. It was built in 2008 and the circumstances were quite unusual. There was a competition, something that is very unconventional for a single-family home, and the winner was Schneider & Lengauer. They then tried to respond to the client?s specific requirements. The client?s request included the demand for a residential and working environment that takes full advantage of the qualities of the site.

Also, another request specified the great importance of an energy-efficient design. The final major request was for the house to reflect the clients? passion and love for the color white. It?s very easy to see that this last request was respected throughout the design. As for the rest of them, we need to take a closer look.

The house has become the home of a family of four and their two pet cats. The same building also houses the graphic design studio of the client and displays the owner?s personal photo collection. Moreover, since the house sits on a hilltop, it also benefits from wonderful views of the piedmont and the peaks of the Northern Limestone Alps. The internal structure is functionally organized. The upper floor includes the bedrooms, the bathrooms and the ancillary rooms. The house also has an open living area in the basement and a two-car garage. In addition, the main level includes dining and living areas as well as a music room and a library.{found on archdaily and pics by Kurt Hoerbst}.

Semiconductors grown on graphene could fundamentally change semiconductor industry

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) have patented and are commercializing GaAs nanowires grown on graphene, a hybrid material with competitive properties. Semiconductors grown on graphene are expected to become the basis for new types of device systems, and could fundamentally change the semiconductor industry. The technology underpinning their approach has recently been described in a publication in the American research journal Nano Letters.

The new patented hybrid material offers excellent optoelectronic properties, says Professor Helge Weman, a professor at NTNU's Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, and CTO and co-founder of the company created to commercialize the research, CrayoNano AS. "We have managed to combine low cost, transparency and flexibility in our new electrode," he adds.

The patented method of growing semiconductor nanowires on atomically thin graphene uses MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy) to grow the nanowires.

"We do not see this as a new product," Weman says. "This is a template for a new production method for semiconductor devices. We expect solar cells and light emitting diodes to be first in line when future applications are planned."

Sunny outlook for nanowires

"Graphene is experiencing tremendous attention worldwide," Weman says. "Companies like IBM and Samsung are driving this development in the search for a replacement for silicon in electronics as well as for new applications, such as flexible touch screens for mobile phones. Well, they need not wait any more. Our invention fits perfectly with the production machinery they already have. We make it easy for them to upgrade consumer electronics to a level where design has no limits."

This invention is thus thought to be an enabler for a future platform for electronics and optoelectronics devices. One possible device with very large market potential is a nanowire solar cell. This type of solar cell has the potential to be efficient, cheap and flexible at the same time. The invention also makes it possible to imagine a future with self-powered nanomachines and advanced 3D integrated circuits built on graphene and semiconductor nanowires, enabling smaller and more efficient electronics.

Weman himself envisions flexible self-powered consumer electronics integrated into everything from clothes to notepads, and of course traditional cell phones, tablets and exercise accessories.

"Semiconductors grown on graphene could become the basis for new types of device systems, and could transform the semiconductor industry by introducing graphene as a preferred substrate for many applications," he says.

South Korea called "courageous" for investigating Samsung's patent ...

Samsung?s ?enormous political clout? in South Korea speaks well of the decision by the nation?s Fair Trade Commission to investigate allegations of its standards essential patent abuse.

Apple has charged that Samsung is abusing the standards essential patents it has already committed to fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory licensing terms, and instead using them to block Apple?s products from the market, notes patent blogger Florian Mueller

Mueller wrote in a report at FOSS Patents that South Korea?s regulatory agency has joined the European Commission in looking into Samsung?s efforts to use its standards essential patents to seek injunctions against older iPhone models.

The move follows a Korean court determination that both Apple and Samsung had infringed the other?s patents, resulting in national sales injunctions against older models of devices from both companies.

While the injunctions are likely to be stayed while the ruling is being appealed, the decision created the impression that Korea was seeking to maintain an appearance of fairness while also seeking to protect Samsung, a massive conglomerate that makes up 15 to 20 percent of the country?s Gross Domestic Product.

Mueller described the decision by Korea?s FTC to investigate Samsung as ?courageous,? given the what he called the ?enormous political clout? Samsung has in its home country. He added that it ?shows that the Korean government is not prepared to turn its country into a FRAND rogue state only because it may suit Samsung?s short-term tactical needs in a global patent spat.?

Who is abusing patents?

Mueller also noted a report by the Korean Times that cited U.S. Department of Justice antitrust chief John Read as diplomatically telling Korean delegates at a antitrust conference his ?hope? that Samsung ?can sell its products in the United States despite the verdict? reached by a U.S. District Court jury that awarded Apple over one billion dollars in damages and returned profits over its patent infringements.

Apple?s more outspoken critics (including those who oppose any legal protection for intellectual property) have vilified that jury and its decision, with well known Groklaw blogger Pamela Jones recently castigating the jurors as ?little patent fascists? that ?failed to fulfill their function,? for not determining that all of Apple?s patents were invalid.

Jones grew famous for her detailed coverage of the SCO lawsuits which alleged broad copyright claims against Linux users, and has since written extensively about the legal battle between Oracle and Google over Android?s infringement of Java copyrights, in both cases conveying a highly negative view of intellectual property holders and a heroic portrayal of the open source projects those cases targeted as infringing.

Blurred lines in the vilification of patent holders

However, the legal battles between Apple and Samsung aren?t as easy to simplify down to an open source David fighting back against a dominant Goliath armed with proprietary patents and other intellectual property rights. Both Apple and Samsung are asserting patent rights against each other, and both are seeking sales injunctions against each other?s products.

The difference is that Apple is seeking to protect what it views are its original inventions, while Samsung is attempting to leverage its patented contributions to open standards (such as 3G and LTE mobile networking specifications) to extract punitive sales bans and monetary awards that Apple insists are neither fair, nor reasonable nor nondiscriminatory, in hopes that these demands will force Apple to give up all of its intellectual property rights and allow Samsung to continue to use the successful results of Apple?s research and development in place of its own, less successful ideas.

While becoming a symbol of ?patent oppression? among the critics of patents, trade dress and other forms of intellectual property following the adverse $1 billion verdict in its case with Apple, Samsung itself has also recently taken on its South Korean neighbor LG, alleging that the firm has stolen its own proprietary technology secrets related to OLED HDTV panels, and is demanding millions in damages.

Similarly, while critics of both intellectual property and Apple have painted Samsung?s Android software partner Google as the hero in fighting off Apple?s intellectual property cases, Google?s own Motorola subsidiary has, like Samsung, increasingly stepped up its efforts to block Apple?s product sales through standards-essential patent licensing demands, the same behavior that has resulted in patent abuse investigations in the US, EU and now Korea.
