San Jose, CA, United States (4E) ? Samsung Electronics Co.?s top smartphone offering, the Galaxy S III, has become the target of Apple Inc. in its ongoing patent dispute with the Korean firm.
Last Friday, the legal battle between the two tech giants took another step at a California federal court.
In a separate case filed in a federal court in San Jose, Cal., Apple accused Samsung of violating its patents in another four of Samsung products, including the Galaxy S III. In February, Apple sued Samsung for infringing its patents in at least 17 of its products.
In a statement, Samsung said it will challenge Apple?s newest case and accused the Cupertino, Cal. company of resorting to litigation instead of fair market competition leaving consumers with limited choices.
The patents that were allegedly infringed in the February case are different from the case that was filed in April 2011 where a jury issued a decision ordering Samsung to pay Apple $1.05bn in damages.
For months, speculation was high among legal and financial analysts that Apple would include the Galaxy S III in its patent case. Currently, it is Samsung?s biggest-selling smartphone with shipments reaching over 10 million units into its first two months of release.
Reports say that Apple?s chief Tim Cook and Google?s CEO Larry Page have gotten into behind-the-scenes discussions since Apple?s court victory on August 24 that proved Apple smartphone technology was copied by Samsung. The ongoing legal tussle is seen by observers as an Apple-Google ?proxy war?.
Samsung uses Google?s Android operating system in all of its products currently disputed by Apple.
In a European trade show last week, Samsung launched new versions of smartphones and other products that run on Android. It also introduced a new smartphone and tablet using Windows 8 operating system by Microsoft Co.
